  1. From a Houston Chronicle interview with Mr. Snicket (aka Daniel Handler)

Handler says people are surprised that the birth of his son, now 3, did little to alter the orphans' grim path.

"When my son was born I was asked over and over, 'Will you be gentler on the Baudelaires?' I thought, 'Why?' The first year of having a child is basically brainstorming all the different ways that the child could die. You're constantly looking around the room for deadly items.

"We used to wake up when our son was sleeping through the night. We wouldn't hear anything. One of us would say to the other, 'If he suffocated, we might as well find out in the morning.' It would be awful, awful news, but we can't do anything about it. Why find out about it at 3 a.m.? At least this way we'll be better rested to deal with it."

I haven't read the books (do I have time?) but really want to, and loved the movie, although I know it was not exactly true to the book.
